The United Arab Emirates has officially implemented a comprehensive overhaul of its visa and residency system, marking one of the most significant updates in recent years. This strategic initiative is designed to attract and retain global talent, skilled professionals, and investors, further enhancing the nation’s economic competitiveness. The new framework introduces more flexible, long-term residency options, simplifying the process for individuals and families to live, work, and invest in the country while supporting its development goals.

Introducing the Green Residency Visa

A key component of the updated system is the new Green Residency visa. This five-year permit allows its holder to sponsor themselves without needing a UAE national or employer as a sponsor. It targets three specific categories: skilled employees, freelancers or self-employed individuals, and investors or partners. To qualify, skilled professionals must have a valid employment contract and meet certain educational and salary requirements. The Green Visa offers extended flexibility, including the ability to sponsor family members and a generous grace period of up to six months to stay in the country after the permit is cancelled or expires.

Expanded Golden Visa Program

The renowned Golden Visa program has also been significantly expanded to attract a wider range of exceptional talents. The 10-year residency is now accessible to more professionals, scientists, entrepreneurs, and outstanding students. Key changes include more flexible criteria for real estate investors, who can now obtain the visa by purchasing a property worth AED 2 million, even with a loan from specific local banks. Golden Visa holders enjoy exclusive benefits, such as sponsoring their family members, including spouses and children regardless of their age, and the ability to stay outside the UAE for any duration without their visa becoming invalid.

New Options for Visitors and Job Seekers

The reforms also introduce new entry permits to cater to different visitor needs, eliminating the requirement for a host or sponsor for the first time. A standout addition is the Job Exploration Visa, designed for skilled professionals and recent graduates seeking employment opportunities in the UAE. Another major update is the five-year multi-entry tourist visa, which allows visitors to stay for up to 90 consecutive days without a sponsor. Furthermore, all entry visas are now available for single or multiple entries and are valid for 60 days from their issuance date, providing greater convenience for tourists and business visitors.

A Strategic Move for Economic Growth

These comprehensive visa reforms are a strategic pillar of the UAE’s long-term vision to build a sustainable and diversified knowledge-based economy. By creating a more welcoming and stable environment for talented individuals and their families, the country aims to attract foreign direct investment and solidify its position as a global hub for innovation and business. The simplified processes and extended residency options provide a sense of security and stability, encouraging long-term contributions to the nation’s economic and social landscape.
