A Turkish Airlines cargo aircraft executed a dramatic and successful emergency landing at Istanbul Airport after its front landing gear failed to deploy. The Boeing 767, flying from Paris, managed to touch down without its nose gear, an event that highlighted the exceptional skill of the pilots and the swift response of airport emergency services. The incident, which resulted in no injuries, is now under investigation by Turkish aviation authorities to determine the cause of the mechanical failure.

The Critical Moments Before Landing

The flight, operated on behalf of Turkish Airlines by ACT Airlines, was on its final approach to Istanbul when the pilots notified air traffic control that the nose landing gear had not deployed. This notification triggered an immediate emergency protocol on the ground. The pilots conducted a low pass over the control tower to allow for a visual inspection of the landing gear from the ground, which confirmed the failure. With this information, the crew prepared for a challenging nose-gear-up landing.

Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) teams were immediately dispatched to Runway 16R, which was promptly closed to all other air traffic. Crews prepared for the landing by positioning fire trucks and emergency vehicles along the runway, ready to intervene the moment the aircraft came to a stop. This rapid mobilization was crucial in ensuring the safety of the flight crew and mitigating potential risks, such as a fire upon landing.

A Controlled Touchdown on the Runway

In a maneuver that has been widely praised, the pilots skillfully brought the large cargo jet down. They first touched down on the main landing gear, located under the wings, and kept the aircraft’s nose elevated for as long as possible to reduce speed. As the plane decelerated, the pilots gently lowered the nose onto the concrete runway surface. The contact created a shower of sparks and smoke as the fuselage scraped along the tarmac, but the aircraft remained stable and on the runway centerline.

The controlled manner of the landing prevented any significant structural damage that could have led to a more severe outcome. Once the aircraft came to a complete stop, fire crews immediately doused the front section with foam as a precautionary measure to prevent any potential fire from the friction and heat. The two pilots on board were able to evacuate safely and without any injuries, a testament to their training and calm execution under immense pressure.

Aftermath and Investigation

Following the successful landing, the runway remained closed for several hours while teams worked to safely remove the disabled aircraft. The incident caused minimal disruption to the overall operations at Istanbul Airport, one of the world’s busiest hubs, as other flights were seamlessly diverted to the airport’s other operational runways. Turkey’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloglu, confirmed the successful management of the incident and praised the flight crew for their professionalism.

An official investigation has been launched by the relevant authorities to analyze the aircraft’s flight data recorders and inspect the landing gear mechanism. The primary goal is to identify the root cause of the failure, whether it was a mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical issue. Such investigations are standard procedure and are vital for ensuring that similar incidents are prevented in the future, maintaining the high safety standards of the global aviation industry.
